Carling Heights is a historic neighbourhood located in the northern part of London, Ontario. Huron Street borders the area to the north, Oxford Street to the south, and Adelaide Street and Highbury Avenue make up the west and east borders. Best known as the home of Canadian Forces Bases London, this neighbourhood is rich in London history. Since the military facilities have scaled down in activity, there has been more opportunity for real estate expansion. Carling Height’s proximity to major roads and LTC bus stops means the residents always have quick access to the city at large. The location itself is fantastic as it is home to several essential amenities.
The residential aspect of the neighbourhood boasts mature homes built in the 1800s. These include farmhouses, post-war single/semi-detached and row housing as well as apartment buildings. From open concept bungalows to spacious two storeys, this neighbourhood is perfect for those on a tighter budget looking for a smaller house near plenty of amenities. Those who enjoy outdoor recreation will love living in Carling Heights! Carling, McMahen and Northeast Parks are all located within. In addition to green spaces, these parks offer accessible parking, baseball diamonds, batting cages, wading pools, play structures, swing sets, tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters and washrooms.
Aside from the Canadian Forces Base, Carling Heights is known for its recreational centres. The Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre is located here. This facility once served military purposes, but now houses a large community centre. People from all over the city head to the centre to make use of the gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness centre, aerobics studio and meeting rooms. Not far from this centre is Carling Arena, which is home to a double pad rink and community space. For even more activities, residents can head to the Wolseley District Skateboard Park which boasts designated skateboarding areas and a splendid community garden. For amenities closer to the west end of the neighbourhood, residents can head to the intersection of Adelaide Street and Huron Street. This intersection is home to plenty of food and retailers. FreshCo., Shopper’s Drug Mart, Tim Horton’s, Wendy’s, Royal Bank of Canada, Merla Mae, and the Beer Store etc. are all located in the area. Residents can head a little further south down Adelaide and shop at the Metro for more groceries and other fast food options. For residents situated in the west end of the neighbourhood, the stretch of Highbury Avenue between Huron Street and Cheapside Street is full of essential amenities. Shop at Giant Tiger, WalMart, No Frills, and Talize. Dine at Archie’s Seafood Restaurants, Thuan Kieu and William’s Cafe. Options are abundant in Carling Heights and this adds to the desire of living in the neighbourhood.
